Urban Tapeworms on the rise

otter — Sat, 06/13/2009 - 15:33

Looks like the increasing popularity of sushi combined with modern practices of fish farming are increasing all of our chances to get a new intestinal friend.

Just one more reason for me to be anti-raw fish :)

I'm not mean.....You're just a sissy.

I finally find a fish I like to eat raw, and now I have to worry about tapeworm. Gross.

Less so if it's wild (vs farmed). Also, if it's REALLY GOOD sushi, it's worth you. Tapeworms have a cure. Bad sushi does not.

y'know....

My paranoia about parasites is only stoked by this, but I was totally put off my train of phobic thoughts by this:

"tapeworm is spread to humans in canine feces"

followed later by this:

"wash your hands (and food) if they come in contact with canine poop"

I'm having real trouble working out a scenario where something I planned to eat comes into contact with dog crap and I decide it's a recoverable situation. If I'm *that* hungry, what are the chances that an opportunity for hand-washing will present??
