Another Honor killing, village proud
Five men in Balla, India, abducted and strangled 21 year old pregnant Sunita Prakash and her boyfriend, 22 year old Jasbir Singh. This was apparently to avenge Sunita's leaving of her husband and moving in with Jasbir (and becoming pregnant by him). The act of violence has almost unanimous support among the locals.
This is the kind of thing that makes imperialists. The kind of thing that makes people think that sometimes some cultures don't have the right to exist, and that some places deserve to be invaded, crushed, and not get their countries back until they can at least have enough basic law to prosecute and convict those that murder for cultural insults.

You're just reflexively advocating out of habit
The phrasing of your statement suggests that a "more enlightened" culture as you envision it is one that would frown on our (assuming USA, since that's the largest executor of the western cultures) death penalty policies. In that sense it would be quite obvious if a culture has a distaste/repulsion for our poor and disgustingly inappropriate application of the death penalty to murderers, it would have an even greater distaste/repulsion to those cultures that execute without due process people that choose their own romantic partners.

The American use of the death penalty is very broadly criticized, as you're obviously aware. But that isn't devil's advocacy, that's redirecting the conversation. One of the things that constitutes "civilization" is a social order and strategies for maintaining it. Where you live, that is a fairly convolute system of evaluation, judgment, incarceration, and sometimes death... in that village, there's a much more direct action-consequence matrix.
It's hard to see how one can clearly judge the other system... I wouldn't be a bit surprised if those folks thought the American death row tradition was barbaric and weird, and they might be baffled by the idea of choosing juries specifically for their lack of familiarity with the question at hand.
Edit: Sorry, forgot to say. Devil advocacy would be this: That girl and her boyfriend and their child all deserved their deaths. They were clearly not willing to participate as adults in the values of their society, and in that context, they should have simply gone somewhere else. Choosing to stay there in defiance of cultural and social norms could only cause trouble, for themselves and any other members of the community who choose to emulate them, and their child would face unspeakable disadvantages in life, between having parents with no sense, and a community with no sense. Also, a 12 year old mother is a terrible idea, and the boyfriend is obviously a pedophile.

I don't think PMMJ was excusing their actions or the village's "justice" so much as simply warning against viewing anything as too black or white. Obviously no one here probably really needs that reminder, but then again I don't think any of us need reminders that religious zealots do fucked up shit either. It's just fun to periodically bring it all up, point and cringe, and then run through the mental gantlet of trying to understand it.
