Suicide isn't the thing people do because they are overwhelmed by how fucking wonderful life is. It is NOT the starshines and rainbows way to express joy and contentment.
If you are truly baffled by someone's behavior, it probably means you don't know them half as well as you think you do. This is the classic incompetence problem--people who are incompetent *always* give themselves high marks for whatever it is they suck at. Parenting, despite what most parents seem to think, is something LOTS of people suck at, and the ones who suck the worst probably give themselves highest marks.
I'm not saying that girl killed herself because her parents suck, but I *also* would not say she killed herself because of emo. That's crap. She killed herself because she was unhappy, and was unable to see any path out of it. Emo didn't MAKE her unhappy, nor---obviously---did it make her happy. (I'm not gonna say it helped anything, but that's a different conversation. Also, there's the conversation about whether people can be MADE happy--or unhappy--by ANY outside influence, or if it's all internal mechanisms at work.)
Sorry for the tirade. I just get so tired of hearing about how someone's happy child died by suicide, and now we have to blame ____________________ because it warped their fragile little minds. It is so much bullshit. Some people just don't know how to cope with distress, just like some parents can't accept that their precious little DNA propagator wasn't as happy as they wanted to believe.
