Man listed as Tokyo's Oldest Has Been Dead for Decades

Everybody thought he was the oldest living man in Tokyo at 111. Turns out, he died some 30 years ago after holing up in his room to become the Living Buddha, and his family had been covering for him ever since. And they would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for Respect for the Elderly Day.

Looking at the BBC news, it kind of seems like there's a spate of not being able to locate so many of the 40,000 centenarians Japan claims to have hanging around. For a country that used to be famous for ancestor worship, they sure aren't good at keeping track of their own aged parents!
